About NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It provides opportunities to student youth studying in Classes 11 and 12 (+2 level), as well as students of technical institutions, colleges, and universities at the graduate and postgraduate levels, to participate in various government-led community service activities and programmes.

The primary objective of the NSS is to provide hands-on experience to young students in delivering meaningful community service. Since its inception in 1969, the NSS has witnessed remarkable growth, with student participation increasing from 40,000 volunteers to over 3.8 million volunteers by the end of March 2018. Students from universities, colleges, and institutions of higher learning across India have actively contributed to diverse community service programmes.

NSS SYMBOL

The symbol of the National Service Scheme (NSS) is inspired by the giant Rath Wheel of the world-famous Konark Sun Temple (also known as the Black Pagoda), located in Odisha, India. The wheel represents the cycle of creation, preservation, and release, symbolizing the continuous movement of life across time and space. Thus, the NSS symbol stands for both continuity and change, reflecting the organization’s ongoing commitment and constant effort toward social transformation.

Vision

The broad objectives of the National Service Scheme (NSS) are to:

  1. Enable students to understand the community in which they work.

  2. Help them understand themselves in relation to their community.

  3. Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve people in the problem-solving process.

  4. Develop a strong sense of social and civic responsibility among students.

  5. Encourage the application of knowledge to find practical solutions to individual and community problems.

  6. Develop competence for group living and the ability to share responsibilities.

  7. Build skills in mobilizing community participation.

  8. Foster leadership qualities and a democratic attitude.

  9. Develop the capacity to respond effectively to emergencies and natural disasters.

  10. Promote national integration and social harmony.

Mission

The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is “NOT ME BUT YOU.”
This motto reflects the essence of democratic living and emphasizes the importance of selfless service, respect for others’ viewpoints, and consideration for fellow human beings. It highlights the idea that the welfare of an individual is closely linked to the welfare of society as a whole. Therefore, the mission of the NSS is to practice and demonstrate this motto through its day-to-day activities and programmes.
